Sciatic pain is often caused by disc herniation. Conservative treatment is indicated as the treatment of choice in cases of lumbar radiculopathy. For pain control, the patient should be taught self-management techniques, including exercises and ergonomic spine protection positions. Evidence is increasing that exercise programs are effective, although the optimal regimen has yet to be defined and may vary from patient to patient.
