Most people with health problems would like to participate in the decisions about on the choices of health professionals who take care of them, but this does not always happen. Lack of time, cultural barriers as well as organizational difficulties are the most widespread obstacles. In rehabilitative medicine, the processes of goal setting and sharing decisions can be useful to ensure greater decision-making autonomy to the patient and participation in the treatment. These processes have proven effective in relation to psycho-relational outcomes and the patient’s quality of life. There exist tools measuring the degree of achievement of goals which take the patient’s point of view into account, such as Goal Atteinment Scaling (GAS). The process of sharing decisions in rehabilitation can be divided into phases and structured within the individual’s rehabilitation project.
