Primary traumatic patellar dislocation is common in young, physically active individuals and is associated with a high rate of recurrent episodes of patellar instability, instability symptoms and eventually patellofemoral osteoarthritis. Knee flexion associated with valgus stress is the typical mechanism underlying patellar dislocation and a partial or complete tear of the medial patella-femoral ligament is detectable in 94-100% of patients. A first-time traumatic patellar dislocation is usually diagnosed on the basis of patient history, clinical examination and diagnostic studies.
