The treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) provides a multifactorial treatment intervention based on cardiovascular risk and lifestyle modification and exercise therapy. The primary treatment in PAOD is supervised exercise designed to improve the patient’s walking autonomy and health-related quality of life, but studies in the literature also show the effectiveness of home-based physical exercise. Walking is always considered the key of PAOD patients rehabilitation; current evidence indicates resistance training as an important complement to walking or, where this is not feasible, as a viable alternative.
