Quinolones are drugs of synthetic origin for local and systemic use. Most of the quinolones used currently belong to a subgroup called fluoroquinolones. The latest generation of fluoroquinolones are active against Gram-negative bacteria and show a better activity against Gram-positive bacteria than fluoroquinolones of the Ist , IInd and IIIrd generation. Despite their effectiveness, fluoroquinolones have important side-effects at the skeletal muscle level, including the possibility of spontaneous rupture of the calcaneal tendon, even months after the end of therapy. In this case report, we show an acute tendon rupture which occurred in a volleyball player who had previously undergone fluoroquinolone therapy.
