Persistent chronic pain is pain that persists over and beyond the period of time required for the processes of tissue healing and repair and which, from a symptom, becomes transformed into a disease per se. It affects a high percentage of patients. At the basis of chronic pain there are numerous neuro-pathophysiological mechanisms, and so the need to modify the classical physiotherapy approach: no longer are manual therapy and therapeutic exercises alone sufficient, but there is also a need for techniques that draw on neuromotor learning and peripheral discriminative sensory stimulation, always taking into account the priorities and functional needs of the patient as well as their preferences.
