Lumbar stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that involves compression of the dural sac, spinal cord and/or foramina and, hence, a reduced blood supply to the nerve roots. A characteristic symptom of lumbar stenosis is neurological claudication, i.e. the patient's inability to walk for long stretches due to the appearance of symptoms in one or both lower limbs. These symptoms become accentuated with walking and are relieved when the patient sits down or lies down. Some studies have shown that therapeutic exercise is a valid pathway to relieve symptoms and the neurological deficit in cases of lumbar stenosis.
