The low birth rate and longer life expectancy are causing a profound transformation of the population structure with an ever-increasing proportion of elderly individuals. The challenge at the level of social and health policies regarding the frailest category of elderly citizens is, in particular, how to determine the best treatment path for each patient. In view of this goal, an approach integrating classic rehabilitation techniques with more technologically advanced means could guide the patient management from the hospital setting to the home environment, resulting in an improved lifestyle of the patients and an increase in patient autonomy.
The purpose of this article is to illustrate how high-tech devices can be integrated into traditional rehabilitation treatments in the care of the frail elderly.
