Indirect hamstring injuries are the most frequent muscle injury in football and account for up to 17% of all football muscle injuries. In a professional football team composed of 25 players there are on average 10 hamstring injuries per season. This means an average of 90 days of time-loss injury (training and/or competition days lost due to the injury) and between 15 and 21 games lost per team per season. This paper presents a protocol for return to training and return to play following hamstring injury approved by the Italian consensus statement (2020) on return to play after lower limb muscle injury in football (soccer).
