Biases are constructs based on misperceptions that influence our decision-making processes. This article focuses on the optimism bias, which describes the tendency of people to overestimate the probability of experiencing positive events and underestimate the probability of experiencing negative events. Optimism bias is also present in health and physical therapy when, for example, therapists are overly optimistic about patients’ prospects for progress and recovery. After illustrating some examples, the article proposes some thoughts aimed at managing the optimism bias in clinical settings.
