The Achilles tendon is the tendon in our body that suffers the most injuries, with an ever-increasing annual incidence. Male gender, corticosteroid use, rheumatoid arthritis, and poor vascularity of the tendon are some of the risk factors for calcaneal tendon rupture. Today it is believed that the surgical and non-surgical treatment of acute Achilles tendon rupture are equivalent in terms of re-rupture rate when the non-surgical treatment protocol includes early mobilisation. What must be considered for a surgical or conservative choice is therefore mainly the risk of post-surgical complications (up to 10%) and the target population.
