Midportion Achilles tendinopathy is a clinical condition characterized by pain in the central part (mid-portion) of the Achilles tendon. It particularly affects people who practice sports activities that involve running and jumping.
The conservative treatment approach most utilized and investigated consists of eccentric calf training and rehabilitative exercise. Evidence on the efficacy of manual therapy is weak, and hence it is not possible to recommend the use of manual therapy for the treatment of Achilles tendinopathy. Nevertheless, manual therapy may be useful in improving the intrinsic factors that can contribute to the development of tendinopathy and to the persistence of its symptoms over time.
