Even doctors get sick. Rehabilitation is for the body, while convalescence is a suspended time to readjust to life, with both body and mind. During illness, one lives with limitations and reaches the point where surgical intervention is necessary. As a patient, one discovers dependence on others and faces the dilated time of the hospital. There is also the understanding of the loss of intimacy and the value of dignity. Being a sick doctor means becoming a role model for other patients and caring for them in a different way. Finally, one appreciates the importance of healthcare staff and the humanity that is created between caregivers and patients.
