The cervical spine is one of the most common sources of musculoskeletal pain. Cervical structures are a potential source of symptoms related to the upper quadrant (upper limbs and vertebrae) whether due to the presence of symptomatic hernias, or to pain stemming from soft tissue or articular disorders. According to the regional interdependence model, impairments of the cervical spine can play a significant role in the genesis and treatment of disorders of the upper quadrant such as symptoms in the shoulder, elbow or hand. The purpose of this article is to present the available literature on this topic, and discuss the clinical usefulness of cervical evaluation and treatments in upper quadrant disorders.
