In football, more than 80% of quadriceps femoral injuries occur at the level of the rectus femoris, which is the only bi-articular muscle of the quadriceps complex. The risk of incurring this injury is much higher during a competition than in training sessions. In a team of 25 players, on average 3 injuries affecting the rectus femoris occur per season, resulting in a total period of absence from sport of about 50 days. This article presents the decision-making process for return to training (RTT) and return to play (RTP) recommended by the Italian Consensus Conference on return to play concerning this type of injury.
