Care as you speak: the weight of words
Laura de Cristofaro, Gianluca Ruggiero
Many clinical conditions of a musculoskeletal nature have no obvious correlation with structural causes to understand the Person/Patient’s experience of pain.
In clinical practice, the use of clinical tests does not guarantee sufficient specificity or accuracy, and even imaging returns findings that are often more related to the age group to which they belong than to the reported symptomatology.
Language and communication choices used during the clinical encounter are critical because they influence and determine the patient’s understanding not only of the diagnosis posed but also of possible treatment options and expected outcomes.
Preferring the use of nonspecific diagnostic labels that emphasize the functional problem and modifiable factors is a simple and low-cost strategy to reduce health care when not needed.
