Well-designed visual languages have the power to convey health messages clearly and effectively to non-experts, including journalists, patients and politicians. Otherwise, they can confuse and alienate recipients, undermining the meaning of the message and leaving room for conflict, mistrust, and pseudoscience. In this perspective, the contribution reflects on the importance and complexity of visual communication of health information, especially within risk and emergency scenarios.
