Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common pain condition that can be managed surgically or conservatively. Conservative management is often chosen when the symptoms are mild or when surgery is contraindicated. When symptoms are more serious, surgery is normally the first choice. The choice of treatment for the management of this syndrome is, however, quite controversial: in most cases the balance is tipped in favor of surgery because there is little evidence in the literature to support the efficacy of conservative treatment. However, based on recent theories, further studies on the effectiveness of manual therapy have been conducted, in particular using a multimodal approach involving nervous system desensitization techniques and neurodynamic techniques. In this article, eight conservative approaches are presented with manual therapy techniques.
