Sports injuries are characterized by a multifactorial component: physical, psychological and social factors interact with each other. The injured athlete often feels negative emotions, fear of a new injury, poor motivation and loss of self-efficacy. Motivation in the recovery phase plays an important role and influences adherence to rehabilitation treatment. This article aims to describe two theories on motivation: the self-determination theory and the goal setting theory. The article also provides some suggestions to physiotherapists as a means to support the injured athlete’s motivation and recovery.
