Manual therapy is one of the most used modalities in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, mainly to achieve pain relief and to improve range of movement. Several manual therapy approaches have been purposed, based on biomechanical models. The mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of manual therapy seem to be mostly neurophysiological. Recent studies have analysed le role of touch in manual therapy, and in musculoskeletal treatments. This article aims to underline the mechanisms of therapeutic touch, and the potential clinical consequences.
