Several medical disciplines are currently engaged in the field of precision medicine. The core element of precision medicine is the identification of subgroups of individuals that share specific characteristics related to disease progression and outcomes.
To date, precision medicine initiatives have rarely focused on function at the person level, but precision rehabilitation is poised to change this by enhancing the concept of function within this innovative approach. However, this transformation is not without its difficulties: as function reflects the extremely complex interaction between biological, psychological, social and environmental factors, precision rehabilitation faces unique challenges compared to other initiatives in the medical field. Patient-centeredness represents a starting point for this innovation in rehabilitation, providing an opportunity to reflect on assumptions and clinical practice of the physiotherapy community.
