The second victim of medical error is the person who caused it. Often there is no attention or care provided to this second victim even when – as in the majority of cases – the person carries a huge hidden weight of moral and psychological suffering. In fact, second victims often suffer even more because they become the object of reproach and are regarded with suspicion or mistrust by their colleagues. In such a situation, the only one who can really help a second victim is the patient who suffered the error or damage itself.
