Interventional physiatry, which first arose as a medical practice specifically focused on treating the spine, has developed over the years into a useful tool, in expert hands, for treating the various different diseases that afflict the musculoskeletal system.
This special branch of physical medicine includes procedures such as joint and vertebral facet infiltrations, epidural infiltrations, nerve blocks, radiofrequencies and much more among its therapeutic armamentarium. It also finds application in neurological rehabilitation: just think of the use of botulinum toxin with ultrasoundguided infiltrations in the treatment of spasticity resulting from central nervous system diseases or secondary to spinal cord injury.
