Movement smoothness is a crucial characteristic linked to a well-known motor activity, a skill that is learnt, mastered and interiorized by the individual. Nevertheless, although the term ‘smoothness’ is commonly used to describe skilled athletic movements, it remains difficult to define, quantify and investigate experimentally. The existing evidence indicates that movement smoothness changes as a result of natural aging, one’s general health status, practice, injury history, and muscle fatigue. Preliminary studies suggest that a smoother running movement reflects a more efficient running technique (running proficiency).
