The incidence of concussion is rising significantly and reaching ever-greater proportions. It is a high-risk and unpredictable injury both in sport and in everyday life, the cause of which can vary from domestic, occupational and sports injuries to road accidents or physical violence. The growing “epidemic” of concussions in recent years is reflected in the increased concern of patients and their families due to an overabundance both of information on the subject (often with a scant evidence base) and of providers offering “miracle” (to say the very least) treatments. “Wild west” is the term used to describe the array of post-concussion therapies proposed – a term that clearly highlights the need to establish appropriate therapeutic standards.
