In people with obesity, excess weight can lead to musculoskeletal problems such as arthralgias and balance disorders, which can adversely affect the patient’s autonomy in performing activities of daily living (ADL). In 2021, a study carried out by Ferreira Bueno and colleagues was published in which skin sensitivity at the plantar area of women with severe obesity (BMI >40) was studied. Plantar sensitivity was assessed using Semmes- Weinstein monofilaments to estimate the response of rapidly adapting skin receptors. The sensitivity threshold was increased in patients with obesity, showing sensory deficits, likely a consequence of an adaptive mechanism of the sole of the foot in response to repeated pressure stress. In patients with obesity and balance disorders, it is therefore useful to also assess the sensitivity of the lower limbs, particularly the foot, setting up a highly individualized therapeutic and rehabilitative program.
