Patients with sarcopenia are at increased risk of falls and have reduced cardiorespiratory capacity. Exercise programs aimed at these people often include training combinations, mainly resistance, aerobic, and balance training. These multimodal programs represent the most effective approach to overall fitness improvement in elderly subjects. To maximize the potential of resistance exercise as a treatment for individuals diagnosed with sarcopenia, consideration needs to be given to identifying the elderly who may benefit from the exercise program. Assessment of muscle strength (e.g., CST or HST) is a practical and time-efficient method of identifying individuals with probable sarcopenia. However, sarcopenia is often not routinely assessed in clinical practice, and, in this regard, it may be appropriate to introduce sarcopenia screening for elderly subjects.
